Let's Learn About RSS Feeds

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication, which is a simple and standardized method of content distribution that helps keep your favorite news casts, blogs, websites, and social media channels up to date.

It consolidates information sources in one place and provides updates when new content is added to the site. With social media, you can see the favorite content shared by others or view everything posted on a website.

You can find RSS feeds on the websites you visit frequently and read new posts through an RSS reader. You no longer need to visit the site as before or sign up to receive notifications of new posts.

.

How RSS Works

As described, RSS is a way for website authors to post notifications about new content on their sites. Content can include news casts, blogs, podcasts, etc.

To post these notifications, the website author creates a text file using an XML file extension for the RSS feed that includes the title, description, and link for each post on the site. (In fact, the website platform usually creates this automatically.) This XML file is then used to add the RSS feed to the website’s web pages. The XML file is a standard format displayed by all RSS readers, allowing new content to be automatically syndicated through this RSS feed.

When website visitors subscribe to this RSS feed, they can read new content from that site in their RSS reader. The RSS reader collects content from multiple XML files, organizes the information, and displays it in an application.

With RSS Feeds and RSS Readers, you can:

  • Follow discussions on web pages and forums without visiting each page to read the list of published comments.
  • Get updates on delicious foods cooked by your favorite bloggers and share recipes with friends.
  • Stay updated on local, national, and international news from multiple sources.

How to Find RSS Feeds

To find an RSS feed, look at the site's main page or homepage, where it is typically marked with an orange button like below.

Each site may display a slightly different RSS icon (the color and size may vary, but the abbreviation "RSS" will be included).

How to Find RSS Links

Open an internet web browser (Chrome, Microsoft Edge) and navigate to the web page. Right-click on the web page and click on "View Page Source" (Chrome) or "View Page Source" (Edge).

This will show you the source code of the web page, and you can use Ctrl+'F' to search for the RSS link.

Right-click on the URL of the RSS feed and choose "Copy Link Address" to paste it into your RSS reader.

By copying the link address of the RSS feed from the web page’s source code into your RSS feed reader, you can check for new content from the subscribed sites through the RSS reader, similar to your email inbox.

There are various apps available for RSS readers, so you can search online for a free RSS service that suits your preferences.
