Network Communication Infra Setup - MDF, IDF

To build a network communication infrastructure, securing an MDF room during the design phase of a building or factory is the most important step.

 

The full name of MDF is Main Distribution Frame, which is commonly referred to as the main communication room or main rack. The MDF is the unit where external lines and internal lines are connected. The lines from domestic telecom providers like KT, SKT, and LGU+ (external lines) do not connect directly to each floor of a building or individual units in an apartment (internal network). Instead, they first connect to the MDF room, and from there, they are distributed to each room through a TPS (Telecommunication Pipe Shaft), which is a dedicated cable pathway.

Since network equipment is present, it should ideally be located on a ground floor (due to the risk of flooding in underground floors). Its position should also take into account the distance to directly connected network equipment (such as cable modems, APs, etc.).

• At least two racks of space should be secured. (The first rack is for telecom providers, and the second is for the internal network.)
• An access floor and ramp of at least 30 cm and no more than 1 meter in height is required. (This is to neatly house all communication cable wiring under the raised floor, providing noise reduction and soundproofing effects.)
• Air conditioning installation is necessary to cool the heat generated by the network equipment.

Once the MDF setup is complete, IDF racks must be installed on each floor or in key locations of the building. 

 

What is IDF?

IDF stands for Intermediate Distribution Frame. It is the unit used to connect and manage communication between the end-user devices (like WiFi modems or PCs) and the MDF (Main Distribution Frame).

 

In a building or factory site with multiple office blocks, a communication pathway needs to be built from the MDF to the IDF racks of each building, as well as to outdoor perimeter fences. The MDF and IDF are connected using UTP cables.

 

To complete a wired line connection, UTP cable wiring must be connected from the IDF terminal box to the end-user devices.
