Wireless LAN Authentication Methods (PSK vs EAP)
When using a wireless VOIP phone (Wi-Fi Phone), there are two authentication methods.
PSK(Pre Shared Key)
- Authenticates access to the AP by sharing a pre-defined key between the device and the AP without an authentication server (no scalability).
- Operates in Personal Mode (WPA-PSK) and Enterprise Mode (WPA-Enterprise).
- Functions at Layer 2 (Data Link Layer), allowing for the implementation of strong network access policies.
- Unauthorized users are blocked from network access through port control.
- Utilizes IEEE 802.1x port-based access control.
EAP(Extensible Authentication Protocol)
- Developed for user authentication via PPP procedures over wired networks.
- Applicable to all link layers and designed to use various authentication methods.
- An authentication mechanism that does not involve the authentication protocol between the device and the authentication server.
- Used in conjunction with separate authentication systems like RADIUS, allowing users to authenticate their devices using IDs, passwords, etc.
